Change to start date for the new Own Client and Duty Solicitor crime contracts

Legal_Aid_Agency_logoThe start of the new 2015 Own Client and Duty Solicitor crime contracts has been deferred. According to the Legal Aid Agency, services under the new contracts will start on 1 April 2016.

This is in order to address legal challenges from firms who were unsuccessful in the recent tender for these contracts, and make sure that the transition to the new contracting model can start securely.

Interim arrangements

  • The LAA has written to existing 2010 Standard Crime Contract holders to offer them the opportunity to continue providing criminal legal aid services from 11 January 2016.
The offer will be a contingency extension based on the 2010 Standard Crime Contract and the extension will last until 31 March 2016.

The below planned LAT reforms will proceed in line with the new contracts on 1 April:

  • Police station fee and Magistrates’ court fee harmonisation
  • Changes to travel payments
  • New CCLF fee scheme for up to 500 PPE

Potential Fee Reduction Reversal

Please be aware that a decision is yet to be made on the offer to temporarily reverse the crime fee reductions of 1 July 2015.

If the reversal goes ahead it will also be deferred until after 31 March 2016.

We will update our Criminal Case Management Software accordingly to reflect the latest changes. The DPS Crime system is designed to be completely flexible although precedents covering a firm’s typical requirements are provided. More information can be found here.
